Schwertsik, Kurt (1935– )

Austrian composer. With Friedrich Cerha he founded the ensemble Die Reihe in 1958, for the performance of new music. He has reacted against the contemporary avant garde.

He studied at the Vienna Academy 1949–57. In 1978 he began teaching at the Vienna Conservatory.

Opera and stage

operas Der lange Weg Zur grossen Mauer (1975) and Das Märchen von Fanferlieschen Schönefusschen (1982); ballets Walzerträume (1976) and Macbeth (1988).

Orchestral and vocal

Draculas Haus und Hofmusik for strings (1968); Symphonie in MoB-Stil (1971; association with H K Gruber); violin concerto (1977); Starker Tobak for soprano and seven instruments (1983); Verwandlungsmusik for orchestra (1983); concerto for trombone (1988); Double bass concerto (1989).
