Schwind, Moritz von (1804–1871)

Austrian painter and illustrator. His works, an expression of the late stage of German Romanticism, are often detailed and brightly coloured depictions of fairy tales and medieval life. They include book illustrations, frescoes, easel pictures, and stained-glass windows.

Schwind was born in Vienna and educated there and in Munich, where he studied art under Peter von Cornelius. He painted and illustrated many legends and folk tales, his works an expression of the growing cultural nationalism of the 19th century. His paintings influenced some Symbolist painters.
