Scipione

Opera by Handel (libretto by Paolo Rolli, based on Zeno's Scipione nelle Spagne), produced at the King's Theatre, Haymarket, London, on 12 March 1726. In the story, Roman pro-consul Scipio successfully besieges New Carthage and falls in love with Berenice, a Spanish captive. But she loves Luceius, who is captured trying to rescue her. Scipio releases the couple after being impressed by the depth of Berenice's love.
