Scofield, Paul

Scofield, (David) Paul (1922–2008)

English actor. Noted for his Shakespearean roles and commanding voice, he appeared as Sir Thomas More in both stage and film versions of Robert Bolt's A Man for All Seasons (stage 1960–61; film 1966, Academy Award). His wide-ranging roles included the drunken priest in Graham Greene's The Power and the Glory (1956), Lear in King Lear, Salieri in Peter Shaffer's Amadeus (1979), and Shotov in Heartbreak House (1992).

Other films include Anna Karenina (1985, for television), When the Whales Come (1989), Henry V (1989), Hamlet (1990), Utz (1993), Quiz Show (1994), and The Crucible (1996).
