Scoresby, William

Scoresby, William (1789–1857)

English explorer, physicist, and minister. In 1806 he was chief officer of the whaling ship Resolution, captained by his father William Scoresby, which reached 81° 30' N latitude, the farthest north then attained. In 1811 he took command of the Resolution. After many journeys to the Arctic regions, during which he made extensive geographical and scientific observations on the east coast of Greenland, he abandoned the sea in 1822, and was ordained in 1825.

He was born at Cropton, Yorkshire, England. He published Account of the Arctic Regions (1820), Journal of a Voyage to the N Whale Fishery (1823), Memorials of the Sea (1850), The Franklin Expedition (1851), and Journal of a Voyage to Australia for Magnetic Research (1859).
