Scotsman, The

Daily newspaper covering Scotland, published in Edinburgh. Established in 1817, The Scotsman was the first newspaper to achieve distribution throughout Scotland. It had a circulation of around 67,000 in 2006. The Sunday sister paper, Scotland on Sunday, was established in 1988.

It was launched by solicitor William Ritchie and customs official Charles Maclaren as an anti-establishment news weekly. Canadian businessman Roy Thomson bought the newspaper in 1953, followed by the Barclay brothers in 1995. In 2004 it changed to a tabloid format.
