Scott, George C(ampbell) (1927-1999)

US actor. He is known for his characterizations of military leaders in films such as Patton (1970) and Taps (1981). Notoriously hostile to awards programmes, he won the Academy Award for Patton but refused it.

Other films include Anatomy of a Murder (1959), The Hustler (1962), Dr Strangelove (1964), The Hospital (1971), Firestarter (1984), and Malice (1993). In his late career he starred in several television films, including 12 Angry Men (1997) and Inherit the Wind (1999).

He is the father of US actor Campbell Scott (1961- ).
