Scott, Ridley

Scott, Ridley (1939– )

English film director and producer. His work includes some of the most visually spectacular and influential films of the late 20th century, such as Alien (1979), Blade Runner (1982), and Gladiator (2000).

Having started as a set designer, Scott graduated to directing episodes of the television series Z Cars before leaving the BBC in 1967. He completed his first film, The Duellists, in 1977. Among his other films are Legend (1985), Someone to Watch Over Me (1987), Black Rain (1989), Thelma and Louise (1991), 1492 – The Conquest of Paradise (1992), White Squall (1996), G.I. Jane (1997), Hannibal (2001), Black Hawk Down (2002), and Matchstick Men (2003).
