Scott, William (1913-1989)

Irish painter, born in Scotland. He was predominantly an abstract painter although he has also painted still lifes and the nude, references to which can often be detected in his nonfigurative painting. His work is distinguished for its sensitive handling and colour.

Scott was born in Greenock. His family returned to Northern Ireland 1924 and he attended Belfast College of Art. He worked in Dublin, London, Cornwall, France, and Germany. Public commissions include murals for the Altnageven hospital in Londonderry 1961 and for the Irish Television Centre, Dublin, 1967. He represented Britain in the 1958 Venice Biennale exhibition.
