Scottsbluff

City in western Nebraska, on the North Platte River, 32 km/20 mi east of the Wyoming border; population (1990) 13,700. In a fertile river valley, the city is an important trade centre for west Nebraska and east Wyoming. Among the products it processes and distributes are flour, beet sugar, corn, beans, dairy goods, and meats. Oil is refined, and tourism is also important.

It is named after nearby buttes that rise steeply from the plains; these formed a major landmark for travellers along the Oregon and Mormon trails. Just southwest is the Scotts Bluff National Monument, incorporating an 245-m/800-ft promontory. Scottsbluff is the home of Nebraska Western College (1926).
