scramjet

Supersonic jet engine under development in the early 1990s that uses oxygen from the atmosphere rather than liquid oxygen to burn its fuel. See jet propulsion, ramjet.

The world speed record for flying was broken in 2004 by a NASA-developed scramjet, which reached a speed of Mach 9.6, or 11,500 km/7,146 mi per hour. The scramjet was attached to a Pegasus rocket, and carried to an altitude of 12 km/7.5 mi by a B-52B launch aircraft. Upon release from the aircraft, the rocket boosted the scramjet to a height of 34 km/21 mi where it began its record-breaking flight.
