Scripps, E(dward) W(yllis) (1854-1926)

US journalist. Scripps founded the Cleveland Penny Press in 1878. He eventually bought another 30 mass-market papers, creating the first US major newspaper chain. In 1907 he founded the United Press news service (later United Press International). A millionaire philanthropist, he left his empire to his son Robert Paine Scripps.
