Searle, John R(ogers) (1932– )

US philosopher and linguist. Searle taught first at Oxford, 1956–59, and then at the University of California, Berkeley. His many publications include Minds, Brains, and Science (1985), which he gave as the 1984 Lord Reith lecture series. His distinctive approach to the study of language and its relation to the mind has greatly influenced linguists, cognitive scientists, and philosophers.
