Sears, Richard W(arren) (1863–1914)

US merchant. Sears established the mail-order business, R W Sears Watch Company, in 1886. He went briefly into business with a watch repairman, Alvah C Roebuck, but sold the company in 1889 and retired. Sears soon came out of retirement, however, and established a mail-order company, called A C Roebuck. In 1893 this became Sears, Roebuck, & Company. Sears retired in 1909, his business a great success.
