Sebring

City and administrative headquarters of Highlands County, south-central Florida, on Lake Jackson, 80 km/50 mi southeast of Lakeland; population (1990) 8,900. In one of Florida's finest citrus and avocado growing areas, it is a fruit and beef packing and shipping centre. It is best known, however, for its Grand Prix sports car race, a 12-hour endurance contest run annually since 1959.

The city was established as a planned community in 1912.

Eight hours of competition at Sebring at least helped team engineer Graham Moore fine tune the V8-powered entry to the Michelin tyres.
