Second World

Former term for the industrialized communist countries of the Soviet Union and Eastern bloc, used by the West during the Cold War, alongside the terms First World (industrialized free-market countries of the West) and Third World (non-aligned, developing nations). Originally denoting political alignment, the classifications later took on economic connotations. The terms have now lost their political meaning, and are considered derogatory.
