Second World |

Second WorldFormer term for the industrialized communist countries of the Soviet Union and Eastern bloc, used by the West during the Cold War, alongside the terms First World (industrialized free-market countries of the West) and Third World (non-aligned, developing nations). Originally denoting political alignment, the classifications later took on economic connotations. The terms have now lost their political meaning, and are considered derogatory.
