Sedalia

City and administrative headquarters of Pettis County, west-central Missouri, 93 km/58 mi west of Jefferson City; population (1990) 19,800. It is a trading and rail transport centre for a rich agricultural region, with railway workshops, meatpacking plants, flour mills, and many industries producing such products as glass, trailers, chemicals, and foodstuffs.

The city celebrates its former resident the ragtime composer Scott Joplin with an annual ragtime festival. Sedalia is home to the Missouri State Fair each August, and State Fair Community College (1966) is here. Whiteman Air Force Base is to the west.
