Seekonk

Town in southeastern Massachusetts, in Bristol County, adjacent to East Providence and Pawtucket, Rhode Island; population (1990 est) 13,000. It is a largely residential suburb. It was incorporated in 1812.

Settled in 1636 as part of Rehoboth, early settlers fled during conflict involving the American chief of the Wampanoag people known as King Philip, returning after 1676. Industry developed, including Rumford Chemical Works, however this industrial area was separated from Seekonk in 1862 to become East Providence. Seekonk became a largely agricultural and residential suburb for Providence as a result of a railroad connection in 1891.
