Segal, Uri (1944– )

Israeli conductor. He studied in Jerusalem, and at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London. He won the 1969 Mitropoulos Competition and in the same year made his debut, in Copenhagen. He was assistant to Bernstein with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra (1969–70), and made his US debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, in 1972. His operatic debut was made at Santa Fe in 1973, with Der fliegende Holländer/The Flying Dutchman. He has lived in London since 1970, and was principal conductor of Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (1980–82). He has recorded the Mozart piano concertos with Radu Lupu.
