Arminius (c. 18 BC–19 AD)German chieftain of the Cherusci tribe. An ex-soldier of the Roman army, he annihilated a Roman force led by Quintilius Varus in the Teutoburger Forest area in AD 9, and saved Germany from becoming a Roman province. He survived an assassination attempt by Tiberius in AD 19, but was treacherously killed by some of his kinsmen in the same year.
