Segovia

Capital of Segovia province in Castilla-León, central Spain; population (2001) 54,400. Products include thread, fertilizer, and chemicals. Segovia has a Roman aqueduct with 118 arches, a 16th-century cathedral, and a 13th-century Templar's church. Its castle, mostly rebuilt after a fire in 1862, was once the palace of the monarchs of Castile; Isabella I of Castile was crowned here in 1474.

Province of central Spain in Castilla-León autonomous community; area 6,949 sq km/2,683 sq mi; population (1991 est) 146,400. Located north of Madrid, Segovia is largely a plateau with fertile river valleys. Industries include grain, hemp, flax, and sheep-raising, and there are granite and marble quarries. The capital is Segovia.
