Seine-et-Marne

Département in the Ile-de-France region of France; area 5,916 sq km/2,284 sq mi; population (1999 est) 1,193,800. The rivers Seine and Marne, and their numerous tributaries, flow through it. On the fertile level land between the rivers, wheat and vegetables are grown, and cheese (especially Brie) manufactured. The south has a large wooded area, the forest of Fontainebleau. The administrative centre is Melun. Other towns include Meaux and Provins.

Seine-et-Marne is formed from parts of the former provinces of Ile-de-France and Champagne.
