Seinfeld, Jerry (1954– )

US comedian and actor. His popular NBC sitcom Seinfeld (1989–98), concerning the everyday life of a stand-up comedian and dubbed the ‘show about nothing’, achieved cult status, earning rave reviews and unprecedented high ratings. Seinfeld also starred Michael Richards (1949– ) as Kramer, Julia Louise-Dreyfus (1961– ) as Elaine, and Jason Alexander (1959– ) as George Costanza.

He became known in the stand-up comedy club circuit in New York, and made several appearances on The Tonight Show and The Late Show with David Letterman during the 1980s. His first television special was Jerry Seinfeld's Stand-Up Confidential (1987) for the cable film channel Home Box Office (HBO).

Seinfeld's book of comic observations, SeinLanguage (1993), was a bestseller.
