A seismogram, or recording made by a seismograph. Such recordings are used to study earthquakes and in prospecting.

Instrument used to record ground motion. A heavy inert weight is suspended by a spring and attached to this is a pen that is in contact with paper on a rotating drum. During an earthquake the instrument frame and drum move, causing the pen to record a zigzag line on the paper; held steady by inertia, the pen does not move.
