Seles, Monica (1973- )

Yugoslav-born US tennis player. She won her first Grand Slam title, the French Open, at the age of 16. She dominated the major events in 1991 but withdrew from Wimbledon and consequently missed the chance to achieve the Grand Slam. In 1991 she became the youngest woman player ever to achieve number one ranking.

In 1993 she was stabbed by a fan of her rival, Steffi Graf, on court during the Hamburg Open. The enforced break from the game meant her missing most major tournaments from 1993 to 1995. She beat Martina Navratilova in July 1995 in her first public match since the stabbing, and won the Australian Open the following year, which was her ninth Grand Slam title.
