Seljuk EmpireEmpire of the Turkish people (converted to Islam during the 7th century) under the leadership of the invading Tatars or Seljuk Turks; see Turkey: history to 1923, Seljuk Turks. The Seljuk Empire (1055–1243) included Iran, Iraq, and most of Anatolia and Syria. It was a loose confederation whose centre was in Iran, jointly ruled by members of the family and led by a great sultan exercising varying degrees of effective power.
