Selkirk

Mill town and former royal burgh in Scottish Borders unitary authority, Scotland, situated on the River Ettrick, 61 km/38 mi southeast of Edinburgh; population (2001) 5,750. Tweed manufacturing is the principal industry. The town was the county capital of former Selkirkshire.

Selkirk

Town in southeastern Manitoba, Canada, 32 km/20 mi north of Winnipeg, on the Red River, near the southern end of Lake Winnipeg; population (1991) 9,800. It is the chief port on the lake and the service centre for an agricultural region. Fish and timber exports, boatbuilding, ship repair, and commercial fishing are major industries. There are also iron and steel foundries.

A Scottish settlement, it was founded in 1812 in the Earl of Selkirk's Red River Colony. The Manitoba Highland Gathering takes place here every July. Lower Fort Garry, an 1830s stone structure built by fur traders, is nearby.
