Selwyn, George Augustus

Selwyn, George Augustus (1809–1878)

English bishop. He was ordained in 1833. In 1841 he went to New Zealand as first bishop, and greatly influenced the development of the colonial church. In 1868 he accepted the see of Lichfield in England. Selwyn was born in Hampstead, London. He was educated at Eton School and St John's College, Cambridge University. Selwyn College, Cambridge, was founded in his honour in 1882.
