semitone

The smallest interval normally used in traditional Western music. The octave is divided into 12 semitones.

They are happy to tell the curious that diatonic music is "based on any type of scale consisting of five tones and two semi-tones in which the semi-tones are maximally separated".
It is limited to not more than 1 or 2 semi-tones but you will get to use even 3 semitones once you are highly skilled.
