Semper, Gottfried

Semper, Gottfried (1803–1879)

German architect. He was born in Hamburg, and studied at Göttingen and then at Munich. He travelled in Italy and Greece, and became professor of architecture at Dresden (designing the opera house there 1838–41). He became professor at Zürich, and then moved to Vienna, where he designed the Burgtheater (1874–88) and two museums.

He advised Prince Albert on the South Kensington Museum (now the Victoria and Albert Museum) in London in the 1850s.
