Semple, Ellen (Churchill) (1863–1932)

US geographer. Despite difficulties breaking into academia because of her gender, Semple pursued a career of writing and field research. Her second and most important book was Influences of Geographic Environment on the Basis of Ratzel's System of Anthropo-Geography (1911). This stressed that physical environment strongly influences both how humans act and how they view the world.
