Senatobia

City and administrative headquarters of Tate County, northwest Mississippi, 45 km/28 mi northwest of Oxford; population (1990) 4,800. Northwest Mississippi Community College (1927) is here.

Near Senatahoba Creek, on an ancient trail from Pontotoc Ridge to the Mississippi River, which the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto may have used, Senatobia was settled on the new railroad in 1856 as a cotton trade centre. Union forces burned it during the Civil War.
