Sendak, Maurice (Bernard) (1928– )

US writer and book illustrator. His children's books with their deliberately arch illustrations include Where the Wild Things Are (1963), In the Night Kitchen (1970), and Outside Over There (1981).

Born in Brooklyn, New York, he attended the Art Students League and illustrated books for other authors. Kenny's Window (1956) was the first book that he both wrote and illustrated. Very Far Away (1957) and The Sign on Rosie's Door (1960) soon followed. He also designed several works for the stage, including an operatic version of Where the Wild Things Are and a production of Mozart's The Magic Flute.
