Seneca County

County in west-central New York State, in the heart of the Finger Lakes, partially bounded by Seneca Lake and Cayuga Lake; area 847 sq km/327 sq mi; population (1990) 33,700. It has two capitals, Ovid and Waterloo. It is mainly a dairying and farming region, with a number of wineries, and attracts many tourists. There is some manufacturing, particularly in Seneca Falls and Waterloo, in the north.

The county is crossed in the northeast by the New York State Barge Canal. The Seneca Army Depot, in Varick and Romulus townships, was a major US nuclear weapons storage facility during the Cold War.

County in northern Ohio; area 1,432 sq km/553 sq mi; population (1990) 59,700. The capital is Tiffin. The economy depends primarily on farming – dairy, grain, livestock, and poultry – and there are clay and limestone deposits. Fostoria and Tiffin have substantial manufacturing.

The county is intersected by the Sandusky River and tributaries.
