Seneca Falls

Town in west-central New York State, in the Finger Lakes, on the Seneca River just west of Cayuga Lake, 56 km/35 mi west of Syracuse; population (1990) 9,400. It is a manufacturing centre, producing television components, pumps, metal products, hosiery, and processed food from nearby orchards. The first women's rights convention in the USA was held here in 1848.

Seneca Falls was settled in 1787, and its 15-m/50-ft waterfall powered early industries including the production of fire engines. It was the home of the suffragette Amelia Bloomer, and her colleague Elizabeth Cady Stanton lived here and was a prime organizer of the 1848 convention; the Women's Rights National Historical Park is here. The town is also home to Eisenhower College of the Rochester Institute of Technology (1965).
