Seneca Falls
| Town in west-central New York State, in the Finger Lakes, on the Seneca River just west of Cayuga Lake, 56 km/35 mi west of Syracuse; population (1990) 9,400. It is a manufacturing centre, producing television components, pumps, metal products, hosiery, and processed food from nearby orchards. The first women's rights convention in the USA was held here in 1848. |
| Seneca Falls was settled in 1787, and its 15-m/50-ft waterfall powered early industries including the production of fire engines. It was the home of the suffragette Amelia Bloomer, and her colleague Elizabeth Cady Stanton lived here and was a prime organizer of the 1848 convention; the Women's Rights National Historical Park is here. The town is also home to Eisenhower College of the Rochester Institute of Technology (1965). |
