Senigallia

Port and resort in Le Marche region, east-central Italy, 30 km/19 mi northwest of Ancona, on the Mediterranean coast at the mouth of the River Misa; population (1991 est) 41,100. Originally an ancient capital of the Senones (a tribe of Gauls that invaded Italy in the 4th century BC), Senigallia suffered greatly in the Middle Ages during the war between the Guelphs and Ghibellines. During the 13th-19th centuries it was renowned for its fair.
