24 September 867Byzantine Empire [political events]The Byzantine emperor, Michael III, is murdered by his ruthless protégé, Basil the Macedonian, who succeeds him as Basil I, founding the Macedonian dynasty (867–1059) which brings the Byzantine Empire to the peak of its power.
