Serban, Andrei (1943– )

Romanian stage director. He worked first with Peter Brook on theatre productions in Paris and New York. From 1980 he worked with Welsh National Opera, staging Eugene Onegin, Rodelinda, The Merry Widow, and Norma; he also directed Aïda in a reduced version (1983). In 1984 he presented a vivid Turandot for the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London and Los Angeles 1984; other London productions included a controversial Fidelio and a successful Prince Igor. In 1983 he directed Alcina for the New York City Opera, and staged the first performance of The Juniper Tree by Glass, at Baltimore. He was artistic director of the National Theatre at Bucharest from 1990.
