Serdán

Town in the east of the state of Puebla in southern Mexico; population (1995) 37,100. Situated 40 km/25 mi from the town of Orizaba, it lies near the foot of Mount Citlaltépetl. It is still officially called Chalchicomula, but has been known since 1934 as Serdán in honour of the revolutionary Aquiles Serdán who died in the 1910 Mexican revolution. The inhabitants live mainly by subsistence farming of maize, but tourism is a growing local industry.
