Serebrier, José (1938– )

Uruguayan conductor and composer. He moved to the USA in 1956; where he studied at the Curtis Institute, and with Copland at Tanglewood. He gained early experience as a conductor with Monteux and Dorati (with the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra, 1958–60). He was music director of the Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra (1968–71), and a guest conductor in Europe and Australia. His compositions use mixed-media devices and include Colores Mágicos for orchestra (1971), in which sounds are converted by ‘synchorama’ into visual patterns, and a violin concerto (1992). He is married to the soprano Carole Farley.
