La Serena

Capital of Elquí province in the Coquimbo region, north-central Chile, 350 km/217 mi north of Valparaíso; population (1996) 123,552. It is a resort as well as a religious centre, and was the scene of the Chilean Declaration of Independence in 1818.

La Serena was founded in 1544. Although destroyed only 2 years later, the city was rebuilt by the conquistador Francisco de Aguirre in 1552. Nearby is the La Silla observatory, the second-largest observatory in the world.
