Sergipe

State in northeast Brazil, on the Atlantic coast; area 21,994 sq km/8,492 sq km; population (1996) 1,624,175. The state capital is Aracaju. The land between the sandy coast and the inland highlands is highly fertile, watered by the São Francisco and other rivers. Products include sugar, cotton, maize, tobacco, rice, coffee, cocoa, flax, and rubber. The state's oil reserves are also being exploited.
