Serly, Tibor

    0.15 sec.

Serly, Tibor (1901–1978)

Hungarian-born US composer. He worked as a violinist and conductor in the USA. He completed the last bars of Bartók's 3rd piano concerto and, in 1945, made a version of Bartók's viola concerto from the surviving sketches.

After being taken to the USA as a child in 1905 and becoming a citizen in 1911, he returned to Budapest 1922–24 to study with Bartók and Kodály. On his return to the USA he played the violin with the Philadelphia Orchestra 1928–35. He played with the National Broadcasting Company Symphony Orchestra under Toscanini and befriended Bartók when he arrived in New York as a refugee.
