Serota, Nicholas Andrew (1946– )

British art-gallery director. He has been director successively of the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford (1973–76), the Whitechapel Art Gallery (1976–88), and the Tate Gallery, London (1988– ). At the Tate he became controversial for instituting annual re-hangs of the collection, which sometimes relegated established favourite works to storage.

He was knighted in 1999.
