Serov

City in Sverdlovsk oblast (region) of the Russian Federation, east of the Urals in western Siberia; population (1996 est) 100,000. It is a major centre of the metallurgical industry in the Urals industrial region, and is located 300 km/186 mi north of Yekaterinburg. Serov was founded in 1894 as an ironworks to supply rails for the building of the Trans-Siberian Railway.
