Serowe

Town in eastern Botswana and capital of Central District, 250 km/155 mi northeast of Gaborone; population (1991) 30,300. Founded in 1903 by Khama III, Serowe is the centre of the Bamangwato people. Coal is extracted nearby at the Morupule opencast mine.

A monument to Khama III, who moved his capital to Serowe from Palapye, was set up in 1925.
