Serpa Pinto, Alexandre Alberto de la Rocha (1846–1900)

Portuguese explorer who undertook an expedition in southern Africa, penetrating to the source of the River Zambezi. In 1881 he received the gold medal of the Geographical Society of Paris. He was made governor of Mozambique in 1889. He wrote How I Crossed Africa (translated 1881).

Before his expedition to southern Africa he served in the army in the Portuguese colony of Mozambique.
