serpent

Keyed tubular brass or wooden musical instrument of the cornett family, played with a cup mouthpiece, originating in the 16th century, probably in France. It has a distinctive S-shape (resembling a serpent, hence its name) and became popular as a church and military band instrument. It was superseded in the 19th century by the ophicleide and tuba, but has seen a revival in the 20th century as a result of the authenticity movement.
