Serpukhov

City in the Moscow oblast (region) of the western Russian Federation, on the River Oka, 90 km/56 mi south of Moscow; population (1996 est) 138,000. Textile and engineering industries are located in the city. Serpukhov has been known since 1339; in the 14th–15th centuries, it was the capital of Serpukhov principality. The city has a number of interesting churches built in the 16th and 17th centuries.
